Some of these themes are apparently obvious as you read through the tragedy. Themes such as revenge and madness present themselves openly through the progression of the story. However, there are other themes that lurk below the surface. You just have to dive a little deeper into the story to find them. On the surface, the theme of mortality and the idea life and death are introduced in the opening act of Hamlet. After his father s death, Hamlet can not stop thinking about the meaning of life, as well as death. Many questions centered around the same concept present themselves as the tragedy progresses.
